We used to be fans of American Idol, but not any more. This season's bloated two hour praise-a-thons are boring.
The Idol judges (Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie) don't give out useful constructive criticism. Instead they give praise and standing ovations.
The new format wastes viewers' time with back stories, some lasting 15-20 minutes, on a single contestant. One fault with this is, besides being boring, contestants with the best and most detailed stories get an unfair edge. It's like the producers are "pushing" that contestant and it becomes a popularity contest, not a talent show.
The boast that the show gets so many millions of votes is a sham. Viewers can vote up to 10 times on each voting method for a total of 30 votes.
For example, after the April 29 show there were 19 million votes cast. At 30 votes per person that is only about 633,000 viewers that actually cast votes. Of course, it's impossible to know how many times each person voted, but it's clear that 19 million people did not vote. In fact, the show only gets about 5.5 million viewers.
About the only good thing is that this season they are kicking off 2-3 people per show which makes the whole process go faster. Not that it matters. In our house we quit watching a couple of weeks ago.
